Last Call Shenanigans

It's always a crap shoot if you walk into the Lamp after 1am on a weekday. Sometimes, it's totally crazy because everyone was having such a good time no one has left yet. Other times, it's totally empty and very chill.

This Wednesday it was the latter....

Quote of the evening
"It's always entertaining at the Lamplighter."
saith the dude sitting next to me at the bar when a group of people were on stage singing for someone taping for some TV show.

Why The Hell Did You Sing That?
Toby's daughter and her friend sang Wilson Phillip's "Hold On".

That song wasn't a good idea when it came out about 15 years ago. Why the hell would it be okay now?

Why We Stayed Until Last Call
Because I was still drinking my beer and I struck up a cool convo with the dude sitting next to me.

Lamp Gone Wild

Last night, the Lamp went wild because it was Toby's 52nd Bday at midnight. It was super packed and super fun. Sunday nights are quickly becoming my favorite night at the Lamp.

Quote of the evening
"Don't mind me, I'm trying to get as shitfaced as fast as I can."
saith Toby a little before her official bday at midnight.

I actually put this in my phone so I would remember it this morning. God knows I wouldn't have remembered it in the cold light of day.

Why The Hell Did You Sing That?
The matching outfit girls sang "Summer Nights".

These chicks were wearing the same freaking outfit. I don't know about you, but I try to look different when I walk into somewhere. And I would be horrified if someone walked in wearing the same thing I was. But no, these chicks dressed the same on purpose. We know this for a fact because Roger asked them. Yikes.

And then they go and sing this song. We joke around that if you sing a song from Grease, then you should pay everyone a dollar. I would be so rich if I could actually hold people to that. Well maybe not rich, but at least I could tip the strippers properly. Sigh.

Why We Stayed Until Last Call
We didn't quite make it to last call...but we stayed pretty late because Eric let us get one last song in. He's good to his regulars.

Thursday Roundup

Yes, I was there on a Thursday. And so was another 96 people...apparently.

Quote of the evening
I'm sure Tommy said something brilliant, but I don't remember. He gets the award.

Why The Hell Did You Sing That?
Jordan doing Bowling for Soup's "1985"

First of all, he's tone deaf. But I don't hold that against him because he has a good time and he's kinda cute. And I actually like that song. But dude, it hurts my head after two Bumblebees. Like nails on a chalkboard, man.

Why We Stayed Until Last Call
Okay, we didn't quite make it to last call.

P.S. Thanks to Kira for guest blogging the other day. I know who needs to be next... Roger, the non-blogger needs to get with the program. You have been officially called out.

On A Tuesday?

I don't tend to go to Lamp on Tuesday because I have another social engagement. But I know I can't go tonight, so I headed out last night.

Roger came with and we agreed that it was kinda weird in there. First of all, it was busy. And someone sang a Selena song in espanol. Not your typical singers. For sure.

Awards for the evening:

Quote of the evening:
"That's the worst song ever known to man."

Saith Roger when two guys went up to sing Poison's "Every Rose Has It's Thorn".

Why The hell did you sing that?
Lolita sang Prince's "Kiss".

Not really her fault since Eric put it up. But come on. No one can sing that. Prince can barely pull it off.

Why we stayed until last call
The one two punch of me and Roger. I did Veruca Salt's "Seether" and Roger wowed us with Hot Hot Heat's "Bandages".

Okay, I didn't stay until last call, but I only stuck around to sing. And that was worth it, because we rawked the house. Much needed after a bunch of horrible song choices and lame singers.

P.S. Russ told me that he wrote a long post and lost all of it. Congrats, Russ, you are now a true blogger. You have just lost your virginity in the "damn I can't believe that freaking program ate my post" arena. Tip for you....write and save long posts in word and then post to the software later. Luvyameanit...bubye!!!

What You Missed

Quote of the night:
"I had to set her free, man"
saith Alex when asked why he broke up with his girlfriend

Why did you sing that award:
the chick that sang the slow song in the midst of all the upbeat songs.

Dude, know your audience and don't ruin the flow.

Why we all stayed until the end of the night:
Russ sang Maroon 5's "This Love"

Why These Hacks Are Writing

So a little about all of us who are currently on the contributor list and why we get to write about this place that we call the Lamp. Z and I have been going here since they started karaoke about...oh eleven years ago. We've grown up at this bar and went from being the youngest ones around to watching all the young kids take over only for us to take it right back. We could both tell you some really interesting stories about the early days and the old bartender and KJ. But that's for another time.

Russ started out as someone who came in to sing (a lot) and ended up working the door and then eventually became a bar back and full fledged bartender.

Tommy has been around longer than any of the other bartenders and is definitely the night regulars' favorite (no offense to the rest of you, but it's true. Though, yes, Russ, you come in at a close second.)

Anyways, this place is crazy and fun and if you let it, can suck you into its black hole before you know it. Hopefully this blog will be the same sort of thing. We all have some ideas about what we want this to be as far as content and what have you, so we hope you come back and see what's going on frequently.

Peace out for now, I gotta bake some cookies and I'll be in for some Jager at last call.

The Lamp Needs A Blog

So we've been kinda throwing this around. The Lamp needs a blog. Because so much happens in a night. There's gotta be some sort of record of it.

Well, yes, I do have my own blog and I do write about what happens, but I think Russ and Tommy (and anyone else that dares) could use an outlet as well. So here we are.

If you want to be a contributor, leave your contact info in the comments and I will send you an invite.
