All Sorts of Interesting

The night started out slow, but it picked up rather nicely. I really wish I could have sang more, but my voice was thrashed. But since I didn’t feel like drinking, it was much better to watch everything unfold through sober eyes. Really.

Quote(s) of the Night:
You guys kill me. All sorts of interesting stuff was going on and that produced a few quotable quotes.

“Don’t light a match near my mouth.”
saith Joelle after trying the vodka tonic that Pete poured for her.

“I don’t care if you love me or not, I’m gonna tell you how it is.”
That would be Toby.

“I like fruitier pussy.”
saith Mike after he drank the Wet Pussy shot.

Why The Hell Did You Sing That?:
Jake and his friend did Huey Lewis and Gwynnie’s version of “Cruising”.
As much as I love Jake, it really wasn’t the best choice for him.

I’m So Glad You Sang That:
So many good songs….Roger did “War Pigs” again. Russ let me play lotto and sang Journey for me. And then there was Ms. Joelle. How can you not love a beautiful woman singing about getting her groove on?

Excuse For Staying Until Last Call:
Why not?

Shout Outs:
Darrell keeps coming strong with the Jimmy’s “Pain”. And Cool T Shirt Guy had a fun tee with a monkey and a spaceship or something or rather.

And last but not least, a big shout out to Lushy who was visiting from New Mexico. See you back at the Lamp in December.

Last Call Again

Last call at the Lamp is the best…

Quote of the Night:
I’m torn, I can’t decide between these two…
“I am so not your average 22 year old.”
saith the young dude that was hitting on Lushy.
“I fucking love this bar.”
saith Roger who told me that he says this every night. And where am I when he says that because it’s the first time I’ve heard it. Or maybe it was just the first time I remember…

Excuse For Staying Until Last Call:
The late night regulars were out in full force.

Shout Outs:
I need to thank the dude in the striped shirt that was playing grab ass with me for the memories.

Not very wordy tonight, saving it for tomorrow’s debauchery.

Monster Ballad Monday

I didn't get to sing enough on Sunday and I needed a fix. Mondays are a toss up and I was hoping I'd get a slow Monday. Karma was on my side.

Quote of the Night:
Tommy gets the trifecta-
"I got issues."
in response to me asking him why he was here for the second day in a row when he wasn't working.
"That tastes like a shit sandwich."
"That tastes like fart in your mouth."
Tommy waxes poetic to Russ on how much he loves Becks beer.

I’m So Glad You Sang That:
It was professional karaoke night - the place was packed with good singers. But anytime Tommy does a Rolling Stones daily double of "Sympathy for the Devil" and "Emotional Rescue", you gotta give out the props.

Shout Outs:
My deepest thanks to all that participated in Monster Ballad Monday. I twisted Natasha's arm and she did Styx's "Babe." And Russ let me do karaoke lotto for him and I put up Bon Jovi's "Bed of Roses" and REO Speedwagon's "Take It On The Run."

Alrighty then....Thursday should be the next outing, Mitchell allegedly has something big going on.....

Sunday Night Fights

Weird night all around. The pinnacle was when someone pretty much threw down fisticuffs with Toby because they were waiting forever to sing. Come on, people, it's karaoke at the Lamp, it's not like there is some music industry person in the crowd trolling for talent. Chill people, chill.

Quote of the Night:
"You're not the best singer in here, but you're the best back door man."
Toby replies to Tommy's comment that he was the best singer in there after he did an amazing rendition of "Back Door Man".

Why The Hell Did You Sing That?:
The dude that did "Pump Up The Jam".
We've been down this road before - these types of songs do not make for good karaoke.

I’m So Glad You Sang That:
Roger shreds on Black Sabbath's "War Pigs".
I'm sure the younger crowd had no clue who this was, but Roger went off.

Everybody Dance Now:
Some dude did "Rhythm of the Night" and it was on.

Shout Outs:
I think it's funny that Tommy keeps coming in with the boys on Sundays. He is basically giving it up that Sunday is the best night to come in. Cheers to that!

Extra Hang Time

Good crowd last night – when I walked in, it was slow, but as usual, after midnight, it got busy again.

Quote of the Night:
“We all heard about you dating that Asian transvestite.”
sorry Mo, I had not heard that about Baker. Thanks for the visual.

Why The Hell Did You Sing That?:
The group that did Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby”.
When is this song ever a good idea?

I’m So Glad You Sang That:
Russ sang “Sister Goldenhair”.
That was unexpected and totally cool.

Pleasantly Surprised:
This guy totally belted out some torch ballad. When he went up there, I was like “great” and then he totally nailed the song. Nicely done.

Shout Outs:
Nice to see Russ on a Wednesday, it was almost like old times. Also good to see Lindsey of Rock Kid fame. And how great is it to see some of the local music scenesters in the bar? That’s what I am talking about.

There may be a round two tonight, we shall see….

Another Pleasant Valley Sunday

I have to admit, I drove back from Santa Cruz yesterday just so I could make it our for the Sunday madness. Now that’s devotion.

Quote of the Night:
“That guy is the best singer that sucks at karaoke.”
Saith Roger who was commenting on the great voice of a dude with really bad technique.

Why The Hell Did You Sing That?:
The chicks who sang “Bohemian Rhapsody”.
Randy had to change his song because these people sang that? Argh.

I’m So Glad You Sang That:
Darrell did an awesome job with Dashboard’s “Hands Down”.

I did take some pix, I’ll post them later this week.

Out of the mouths of babes

Rolled in early as I swore I would go home and pack for my trip. (Leaving tomorrow, not sure if I’ll be back Sunday or Monday.) Still stayed until almost last call. Old habits die hard.

Quote of the Night:
Everyone was full of gems, so here are a few of the best:

“Here comes the Love Shack crew.”
saith Baker when a busload of kids walked in the door. (more on them later)

“There’s good scenery in here tonight.”
saith Boytoy as he was scoping the girls (mostly blond with boob jobs, there’s no accounting for taste.)

“Quick, someone else say something brilliant.”
saith Russ as he was trying to avoid having something he said become the quote of the night.

“What’s up with drinking shots with your Coors Lite?”
saith Roger as he lamented why you would bother with the piss water if you are otherwise drinking tequila.

Why The Hell Did You Sing That?:
There were some Asian kids that must have been deprived of a karaoke machine at home. They totally ruined “My Girl”.

And then the Love Shack crew were horrifying when they did “Come Sail Away”.
They didn’t sound that bad, but what was up with the dude who unbuttoned his shirt all the way and was teasing us with his six pack? Or his friend that was up there with a mike in one hand and his flip flops in another?

I’m So Glad You Sang That:
That would be Roger doing a Journey song that somehow escapes me at this moment.

Shout Outs:
Natasha and Lindsey of Rock Kid fame made an appearance. Good to see you on a school night.

The Big Comedown

It was CTSG's bday last night. And I thought the place would be going off, but it was kinda weird in there. Maybe it was me in my pharmaceutical haze. Dunno. But yeah, a good time had by all for the most part.

Highlights....

Quote of the Night:
"It's a sausage fest in here tonight."
saith Boytoy as he lamented on the bad boy/girl ratio.

Why The Hell Did You Sing That?:
The group of guys that decided it was techno night.
That shit makes for some seriously bad karaoke.

I’m So Glad You Sang That:
Tie: Roger doing "Creep" and Russ doing "The Scientist"
The night never had a cohesive vibe, but these two hit it right when they sang these songs.

Excuse For NOT Staying Until Last Call:
Because everyone was too drunk to deal with.

Thursday Is The New Friday

I don't tend to come in on Thursdays until really late, but a bunch of old school Lamp kids came in, so I was there to represent. It started out slow, but by 11, the Lamp was in full swing - a 21st birthday party and a bachelorette party to add to the mix of Thursday regulars.

Quote of the Night:
That would be the title of the post. I'll credit that one to Roger.

Oh wait, the other quote that isn't funny if you weren't there to see but was beyond classic was "Do you always eat M & M's that way?"

From the guy watching me eat M&M's out of Heather's mouth.

Shout Outs
Quite honestly, I wasn't paying attention to who was singing or what not. Too busy being a spectacle. But it was definitely cool to see the old school singers. Ethan, Loren and Heather are former regulars that used to rock it with me back in the day.

That's definitely one of the best things about the Lamp - you just never know who will walk in to rock your world.

Every Day Is Like Sunday

Another great Sunday for the books.

Quote of the Night:
"I'm as sober as a preacher on Sunday"
saith Boytoy as he drank his O'douls.

I am So Glad You Sang That
the rock kids dominating the stage with "Wonderboy"

You guys are awesome. Do I tell you that enough?

Shout Outs:
-My buddy Jamal showed up and I made him drink a Peppermint Mocha with me. Awesome.

-Nailah needs to sing "Killing Me Softly" more often.

-and last but not least, thanks to my Asian brother (I am so bad with names, forgive me) for letting me horn in on Abba's "Mamma Mia". That was so fun!!!

I will have pictures from last night up on flickr later. Until then, rock on, kids, rock on!!!
