Singer Night

Super slow for a Wednesday. Tommy wasn't there because he was being a Rolling Stones groupie in Pittsburgh. So it was Russ and Rick and a bunch of hump day troupers.

We Are All Stars:
Slow = lots of songs. I got 4 songs in. That's what I am talking about. Sorry to everyone who had to hear my attempt at No Doubt's "Ex-Girlfriend". I need to listen to that a few times before I try it again.

Karaoke Lotto Results:
Russ let everyone else choose his songs last night. Before I got there he did "Try A Little Tenderness" (yawn) and "Like A Virgin". (sorry I missed that one.) But then I got to the list and made him sing The Cardigans "Lovefool", Journey's "Anyway You Want It" and to stop torturing him, John Mayer's "No Such Thing".

Best Use of a Suit:
Randall walks in a suit and wants to sing Black Sabbath."War Pigs" it was. Rock on.

Nothing To Be Afraid Of:
Roger was hesitating to put something new up, but there was no one around, so it's the best time to try new songs. That would have been the Toadies' "Possum Kingdom". And that completely rocked.

What's Missing Here?

Why wasn't I warned that Russ would not be there last night? I probably would not have ventured out last night if I knew, but eh, it all turned out okay. But I am totally cracking on him for not sending me the memo. Sigh.

Glad You Sang That:
Gotta give it up to Nailah for singing Alanis Morrisette's "You Oughta Know" like a woman scorned.

And who can forget Darrell laying it out there with Jimmy Eat World's "A Praise Chorus"?

Oh and I have to say that I was pretty stoked that my version of Madonna's "Beautiful Stranger" went over so well. Though I will never sing those Da Da Da Da's...

Pleasantly Surprised:
Those girls that did the Salt-n-Pepa song. One of the hardest in the book and they actually did a pretty good job.

Shout Outs
Little Jenn, you did not need Roger up there while doing Cheap Trick, you have it down. Oh and speaking of Roger...very inspired to choose Def Leppard.

Okay, I think that's it....I'm sure there will be a bonus appearance this week, it's bound to happen. Until then, stay cool, kids!

Alternate Universe Wednesday

Seriously a weird night in the Lamp. When I walked in, I felt like I was in an alternate universe. It was too busy for a Wednesday. And there were a bunch of weirdos in there. But hey, that's what you get post full moon on hump day.

I’m So Glad You Sang That:
Roger wowed us with Cheap Trick's "I Want You To Want Me"

A little power pop for the crowd.

Why The Hell Did You Sing That?:
I say it was a tie between the chick that did "The Rose" and the chick that did "Hollaback Girl"

Roger and Kira was all over the chick that did "The Rose" for killing the mood. And I agreed until this other chick tried "Hollaback Girl". Damn her, now I've got B-A-N-A-N-A-S stuck in my head.

You’re Not As Good As You Think:
I hestitate to say her name, because she's a regular and I like her. But man, cut it out with the Erykah Badu. You freaking kill me every time you sing that. And when you sing Radiohead's "Creep". Oh my ears.

Miscellany:
Russ walked in and walked right out because of the crowd. I told him the amateurs would leave early and sure enough they were gone by 11.30. Patience, dude, patience. Oh well, there's always Sunday.

Back To Normal

(I'm late on my update, give me a break, I am out of practice doing shots and I crashed when I got home on Sunday and was at Jury Duty Monday, so no updating yesterday....)

It wasn't too busy on Sunday, things are back to normal now that summer is over.

I’m So Glad You Sang That:
Russ let me do karaoke lotto and I picked Beck's "Sex Laws" and then Roger did Joey Ramone's version of "Wonderful World". Nothing like a punk rock take on a classic tune.

Mis-sung Lyrics:
We are drunk....no one can tell us we're wrong
Searchin' our hearts for so long, both of us knowing
Love Is A Battlefield

You can thank Roger for making that one up, but thank the Rock Girl contingent for singing that one.

Miscellany
The Rock Kids were out in full force and were getting plastered. (Irish Car Bombs, Alysse????) And I have to say that Little Jenn was very sweet when she was all concerned about me having a good time. I was fine, just in a quiet mood. Trust me, there is no mistaking my bad moods.

Okay, that's it.

Where It's At

I love hitting the Lamp after a good show. Last night I was all geeked up after seeing Garbage and ran into some fellow show people - though they had a completely different experience at the Kasabian/Jet/Oasis show.

Quote of the Night:
This one shall go unawarded because I simply didn't keep track.

Why The Hell Did You Sing That?:
Anytime someone does "Summer Nights" from Grease, it's the winner.

Russ and I agreed that you should have to pay to sing this song. It's old and tired already, find a better duet. Hell, do Gwynnie and Huey's version of "Cruising". That always makes for a good time and then you don't have everyone in the bar hating you

Runner up to the chicks that ruined Veruca Salt's "Seether". I should've done it again right after them to show them how it should be done.

I’m So Glad You Sang That:
We all did tributes to the shows we went to - I did Garbage's "#1 Crush", Tom did Oasis' "Wonderwall", Russ did Oasis' "Champagne Suepernova" and Roger paid tribute with Jet's "Are You Gonna Be My Girl?".

etc.
It was nice to be at the Lamp when it was mellow and everyone was having a good time. And sorry to anyone who was trying to watch anything but CNN. I had to catch Anderson Cooper, so I changed all the channels. I promise I'll leave it on ESPN the next time.

How It Should Be On A Wednesday

First of all, I'm sorry I missed Monday, but you know how it goes, sometimes you just can't drag yourself out. That being said, I am glad that Roger and Natasha posted, but I do want to discuss the whole idea that posting here is "homework" or "someone's responsibility". I love the Lamp, it is where I want to be most nights when I am out. I like to write and this was my outlet for all the crazy things that happen while I am there. So don't feel like if you are there, that you have to write. I don't always write about my nights there. If you feel it, go for it. No one is going to kill themselves if there isn't an update on here. I'm just saying....

Now, I did head into the Lamp early and intended on leaving early as my voice is still getting back to normal. But so many good singers made me stay. And while I curse all of you for making me stay out so late, you know I had a great time, so all is not lost.

I’m So Glad You Sang That:
Can we just say that Nailah can belt out a tune? "When The Lights Go Out In The City" has never been done better.

Why The Hell Did You Sing That?:
I'm sure most of you would say that Russ doing Color Me Badd's "I Wanna Sex You Up" was a crime.

You can blame me for this. I wanted to hear it. It's not like he sounded bad, I should just know better. That was damn cheesy.

Everybody Dance Now:
Come on. You know that you wanted to dance when Baker, Russ and Marty did Parliament's "Flashlight". I thought for sure that George Clinton was going to land the mothership right on the Lamp's roof to get in on the funk.

Pleasantly Surprised:
Marty surprised me twice - first with his spot on rendition of the Pet Shop Boys and then with a really good version of good ol' Britney's "Baby One More Time".

Shout Outs:
The Rock Kids can't stay away. Tee hee. See you again on Sunday.
